What I’d Do Differently If I Were Issuing an RFP Today

If I were issuing an RFP today, I would spend less time asking vendors what they can do,

and more time clarifying what we actually need.

What I’d Change

1. Fewer Generic Requirements

Most vendors can respond “yes” to most lists.

I’d focus on:

  • What’s unique

  • What’s difficult

  • What’s non-negotiable

2. More Scenario-Based Evaluation

Instead of features, I’d test:

  • Real workflows

  • Real data constraints

  • Real edge cases

3. Clearer Internal Alignment First

Before issuing anything, I’d ensure:

  • Decision criteria are agreed

  • Tradeoffs are understood

  • Stakeholders are aligned

4. Stronger Evaluation Discipline

Scoring models matter less than:

  • Consistent interpretation

  • Structured discussion

  • Willingness to challenge assumptions

Final Thought

RFPs don’t fail because vendors respond poorly.

They fail because organizations ask incomplete questions.

Improving that front-end clarity is a core part of how we support selection processes at 7Dimensions Consulting.
